A Long Day in the Park
The National 12 Stage Road Relays, 25th March 2006
Report by Tom McKee

It was early Saturday morning while most sensible people are still asleep in bed, and we were on our way to the Northern 12 Stage Road Relays at Heaton Park in Manchester. The team began to take shape as we picked up various team members on our journey towards Manchester. After being stuck in traffic due to an accident and a team member stopping a road rage incident we made it to Manchester much quicker than expected. Everyone was ready for a good race, with four out of the twelve team members called Michael it could be a confusing day!

When we arrived at the race start area it hadn’t even been set up yet, with only just under an hour to go before the start! Gregan Clarkson then took on the role of team manager as he declared the team and made sure we all got the right numbers, and then he was off on his warm up.

As the race began the sun was shining and the weather was warm for once! Gregan was our first runner off. He started steady in the top half of the pack, with a long hilly two laps of the course to come. Mike Baggott waited eagerly on the line for Gregan to appear in the finishing straight, and probably saw Gregans' stripy socks before he saw Gregan! Then Mike was off on his one lap of the course, while keeping us inside the top fifty runners in the race. David Mather was our next runner on the line ready to go, and very soon Mike appeared with the difficulty of the hilly course showing on his face, and David was off and still keeping us inside the top fifty. The next runner off was Tom McKee and with two runners in sight just ahead he set about chasing them down, which he did only for them to pass him again! But into the second lap they were caught again followed by another three runners ahead of them. Tom finished with the team in 41st place, and tried to walk in a straight line up the finishing pen put could only zig-zag as Danny Holiday set off on his one lap of the course. Danny then brought the team into 36th place with the fastest short lap run of the day for our team. Danny then passed over to Mike Tanner who set off on his one lap of the course with his hair flowing behind him like in a L'Oreal shampoo advert. Mike then brought the team into 32nd place.

Danny Holiday - Fastest Short Lap for KuHAC

Half-way through the race and Steve Rennie was our next runner off. He stormed round the course with his teeth gritted together as he held off the opposition to hold our position of 32nd place. Steve then passed over to Mike Day who despite chest pains half way round fought to keep the team inside the top 40. Mike then passed over to Mike Friend who put in a good lap as he shouted to team members half way round “It’s a bit hilly!” Mike then passed over to Stuart Buchan with the team in 40th place. Stuart shot round the course like a man on a mission as other teams tried to challenge or position, and passed over to Paul Sharp with the team in 42nd place, Paul instantly had to battle for his position with the other teams that were starting around him at that time, but soon he got into his stride on his one lap of the course, with his hair flowing behind him like another escapee from a L'Oreal shampoo advert. Paul soon came into the finishing straight with the team in 41st place and passed over to our final runner Ben Rumford. Ben set off with the weather starting to close in, the sun had now been replaced by rain! But Ben ignored the worsening weather to fly round the course and bring the team home in 35th place.

Steve Rennie - 9km in 33:22

The final position of the team was 34th place. We needed to be in the top 25 to qualify for the national road relays, but all team members had given 300% to the race, with some never having run in such an event ever before. Next year the team will be much stronger and we will qualify.

JOHNSON JUDGES RACE TO PERFECTION
ESAA national XC champs, Mansfield - Saturday 25th March 2006
Jon Mattos Reporting

James Johnson capped off a wonderful cross-country season with a superb performance at the English School National Championships in Mansfield. The 17-year-old from Leconfield ran the perfect race around 7km's of undulating land in drizzly conditions to finish 21st in 24.06min in the senior boys race. The Kingston-upon-Hull athletic club ace did it all starting way back in fourth in the Humberside team start pen and was down in 60th midway through the race. But Johnson worked his way through the field and passed KUH team-mate Robert Hodges with 2km remaining and never looked back as he went onto cross the line as first Humberside runner home. It was the culmination of some great races for the talented middle-distance runner after winning the county championships and finishing well at the UK Inter-counties in Nottingham.

Meanwhile Hodges, 18, cut the gap to Johnson in the closing stages but even with a sprint finish still finished four seconds behind in 24th. Stephen Feasey finished 186th in 25.56min, while Tom Fisher was 192nd in 26.03sec.

In the inter-boys event Jack Cutsforth (22.05min) showed he could master the art of cross country, following a hit-and-miss season, as he claimed 126th. He beat Matthew Pye by just seven seconds but with the high volume of athletes competing from all over England that amounted to 20 places, with John Gilchrist (23.52min) finishing 288th after running 6km.

Tom Smith made it a day the KUH boys could be proud of as he claimed 75th in the junior boys event in a time of 14.58min.

In the inter-girls 3.5km race it was the end of a gruelling season for Michelle Stone, but she came up with the goods once more to claim 37th. Stone, who has won countless races during the cross-country season, finished in 14.00min, with Claire McPhee beating Lauren Havercroft in a sprint finish to narrowly pip her to 224th in 15.50min.

Elsewhere, Sarah Fawcett was 77th in the senior girls event in 16.32min and Beth Gray (13.31min) and Beth Woodrow (14.09min) finished 189th and 291st respectively in the junior girls.

NEW SIGNING SAJKOVIC IN GLOWING DISPLAY
Jon Mattos reporting from the UK Inter County Cross Country Championships, Nottingham
Saturday 11th March 2006

Kingston-upon-Hull Athletic Club left the blue ribbon event of UK cross country running smarting at what may prove to be a very worthwhile signing in coming years.

Samantha Sajkovic transferred to Hull from rivals Beverley Athletic Club in January, having qualified to represent Humberside at the UK Inter County Cross Country Championships by finishing second at the county championships for her former club. Sajkovic decided to make the switch in allegiance shortly after this and showed just what she is capable of at Wollaton Park as she romped home in 21st in the under-13 girls event. There was double joy for Sajkovic as she sauntered past club rival Beth Gray, the winner of the county event in January, to record a time of 14.26min over an arduous 3km course. Gray (15.45min) finished in 174th while Vicky Parcepepe (16.57min) was 269th. Sajkovic would have been inspired just minutes earlier by the performance of a more seasoned Kingston-upon-Hull athlete.

Jo Maddick has enjoyed a successful year in cross country, having won an IAAF race in Spain representing England, and she used all her acumen to finish well in the under-20 women's race. Maddick went off sensibly from the start but worked her way through the field to claim ninth in 24.00min.

Another of the club's fine under-20 athletes during the cross-country season has been James Johnson. The Leconfield teenager has gone unnoticed for much of this season, owing to the fact that most of his races have been placed at the end of the day when most spectators have packed up and gone home. But Johnson was first up around the course and followed up his fine performance at Barton at the end of February to finish a respectable 86th in 29.29min over 8km of the zig-zagging trails.

Despite the glamour of the whole event being shown live on Sky Sports it was a tough day for many of Hull's finest. Under-15 county champion Liam Holiday (17.52min) was fourth after the first section only to suffer badly in the later stages and finish down in 243rd, with club colleague Thomas Smith (17.12min) in 158th.

Another of our county champions, Tom McKee, also found things hard going and finished 234th over the 12km the seniors had to endure. Gregan Clarkson (42.54min) finished well in the same race to claim 155th while Jonathan Mattos (46.49min) was down in 258th.

Cheryl Lyons admitted to finding it unpleasant in the senior women's event as she finished 146th in 33.43min, while Stephen Feasey (141st in 22.52min) and Matthew Pye (180th in 23.26min) battled bravely for places in the under-17 men's.

The ever-reliable Michelle Stone (16.23min) did provide some joy late in the day with an astute piece of running to finish 37th in the under-15 girls. She was flagged up well by Kingston aces Clare McPhee (17.02min) in 107th and Laura-Jane Day (17.18min) in 138th. Elsewhere, youngster Dominic Haigh (14.35min) and Thomas Holgate (14.45min) finished 212th and 234th respectively in the under-13 boys race.

PODIUM PLACE PUTS ICING ON CAKE FOR NIKKI
AAA U20 Indoor Championships, Birmingham
Report by Jon Mattos

Nikki Maddick celebrated her inclusion in the latest "On Camp with Kelly" training programme with a bronze medal at the AAA under-20 indoor championships in Birmingham. The 18-year-old Kingston ace, who was recently told she would be jetting out to Melbourne with five others to learn from double Olympic champion Kelly Holmes, finished third in the 1500 metres at the NIA in a time of 4min 36.11sec.

Meanwhile, Rob Hodges finished fifth in a straight final of the under-20 1500m in a time on 4min 04.97 and Lois Earl was seventh in the heats of the 60 metre hurdles in 9.80sec in the under-17 category.

STONES TO BE THROWN INTO DEEP END

Kingston Upon Hull star Katie Stones will make the step up and compete with the seniors fresh from a magnificent display in the Isle of Man. Stones achieved the qualifying time for the World Cup of Race Walking over the weekend and in the process smashed her personal best over 20km.

In only her second race over this distance Stones finished in 1hr 44.19min - comfortably 41 seconds inside the 1.45 required to reach the worlds.

Katie Stones selected for World Cup

The Kingston teenager narrowly missed out on the time needed for a place in Melbourne even though she won the Commonwealth trials in September, but now competes in La Coruna in Spain on May 13th and 14th in the senior's race, having come 12th in the juniors last time out in the worlds.

FUTURE STARS SHOW THE WAY SOUTH OF THE RIVER
Jon Mattos reporting from the Barton cross-country event on Sunday 26th February

Three almighty tussles for club bragging rights there might have been - but Kingston Upon Hull Athletics club went away from the 26th annual Barton cross-country event fresh in the knowledge that the future state of girls cross-country running was in great shape.

In the under-11 girls Katie Michaels led KUH to team gold despite narrowly missing out on first place. Michaels finished just two second ahead of team-mate Katie Norris, who was third in 8.00min, while Alice Middleton was just a further two seconds further back in fourth in a thrilling finish. Holly Skinner's eighth spot (8.26min) capped off a superb race for Kingston's future stars.

Michelle Stone continued her dominance of cross-country competition in Humberside this season with another measured piece of front running in the under-15 girls. Stone raced to win in 11.13min and with Claire McPhee (12.14min) coming home an impressive fifth and Jodie Spencer (12.45min) in 11th KUH scooped another team gold. It proved a good race all round for coach Sam Hodges' athletes as Hannah Bentley, 13th in 13.02min, and Lauren Havercroft, 17th in 13.40min, proved there is real strength in depth in the under-15 age group - especially with Laura-Jane Day performing well at the National Championships in Parliament Hill, London.

U15 Girl Team Gold

For one of KUHs young starlets it was as if she had never been away. Stephanie Bloor was competing for the first time in 11 months following a foot injury and showed her quality had not deserted her as the Kingston teenager finished second in the combined senior/junior women's race. Bloor, who completed the 4km course in 15.41min, saw off fellow club ace Cheryl Lyons (15.59min) into third, while Sarah Fawcett (16.44min) came home in fifth to win the club another girl's team-gold.

Meanwhile, running in the same race alongside her older peers, under-17 runner Sarah Gibson finished a commendable 11th in 18.31min to scoop silver in her age group.

And with Samantha Sajkovic claiming second spot in the under-13 girls race it was a great day all round for the KUH females However, that was not to say the boys did not shine on a rainy day south of the Humber.

In the senior men's race Gregan Clarkson claimed gold in 35.50min over the 6 -mile course, but it was the performance of James Johnson which stood out most. Teenage ace Johnson, a junior man running with the senior's, had a nasty fall in the woodland part of the course on the first lap and grazed his shoulder badly. Undeterred Johnson picked himself up and darted back towards the front of the field and claimed a comfortable second place finish in 36.18min. Jonathan Mattos (38.03min) brought the club its fourth team gold of the day as he cruised home in fourth, while Mark Friend was 12th overall and 7th veteran past the post in 43.14min.

In the under-11 boys, our lone representative Callum Skinner dominated from the start. His competitors tried to keep up with the pace but were no match, as Skinner seized victory with a clear 30 second gap.

Callum Skinner led from the start

In the last race of the day Stephen Feasey came second in the under-17 boys in 21.42min and Tom Fisher was third in 21.53min, while Jon Gilchrist was forced to pull out of the race on the final lap.

Elsewhere there was a silver for John Tucker in the under-15 boys (14.36min), with Tom Smith just outside the medals in 4th place (15:17) and Andrew Anderson in 8th (17:10). TJ Holgate claimed fifth in the under-13 boys in 12.39min.

National Cross Country Championships - Saturday 25th February
Report by Tom McKee

As I travelled down to London last Friday my mission if I chose to accept it was to run the National Cross Country Championships at Parliament Hill on the Saturday. I was one of the only two club members running the Nationals, let’s get it sorted for next year and have some proper teams out! As the train got closer to London the weather began to look colder and then I could see snow on the ground, but luckily it had all disappeared by the time I reached London, but it was still freezing cold! When I had got rid of my luggage I spent the rest of the day being a tourist, followed by a meal in an Italian restaurant in Covent Garden in the evening, I had to stock up on some pasta power for the race the following day!

I arrived at Parliament Hill the following day with two objectives, walk the course and get warmed up for the race. My team support (my parents and friends) had already got my number and made sure it was on my vest. I had been told that the course was not very muddy, I soon found out that it was anything but! With the senior men’s race being the last race of the day the course would be nice and churned up.

One of the first races of the day was the under 15 girl’s race with Laura-Jane Day, the only other runner for the club finishing in 130th place out of 293 runners in a time of 21:29.

Eventually the time came for the senior men’s race. Everyone stood back from what we thought would be the start line but then the gun went and we were off, with a few people having to avoid the wooden posts that marked out the pens. The start was fast with over 1000 runners competing, it was like running into battle! As soon as we hit the top of the first hill you were straight into the mud, with someone losing one of his spikes in the mud and then running the wrong way up the course to retrieve it. I had started at a steady pace but began to speed up as I got into the race, passing the runners who had started way to fast! The course twisted and turned and mud went from spike sucking gloop to huge puddles that splashed everywhere. Every bend was a mud bath resulting in me nearly running into a tree after realising I couldn’t take a bend as sharp as I had intended to, luckily I managed to hop round the tree at the last minute and then did exactly the same thing on the next lap! The support for the race from the spectators was fantastic, with most of the course being lined by people cheering on their club. Nott’s AC more than made up for the lack of KUHAC team members at the race by cheering me on, I used to train with them at university. One lap of the course felt like the 12k that we had to run, but after two large laps the end was in sight. As I came down the final hill I could already see the finish in the distance, so I began to wind up the pace and make up those few extra places, I even managed to pass someone in the final few metres and then the race was over. I had finished in 283rd place out of 1289 runners. I was coated in mud, I even had mud in my ears! I walked through the crowds surrounding the finish to find my parents so I could get some kit on, I was cooling down and it was freezing! I eventually got my kit on after the usual after race photos of me covered in mud. And then it was off to warm down, find the nearest shower and eat as much food as possible!

The Nationals next year will be held in Sunderland. Let’s make sure that we get a proper team out, it is definitely an event not to be missed.

KINGSTON ACES TRAVEL WELL
National XC Championships - Saturday 25th February 2006
Jon Mattos Reporting.....

Tom McKee further added to his array of achievements this season over the discipline of cross country with a fine display at the English National Cross Country championships at Parliament Hill fields in London.

The KUH ace, who won his first major title at the Humberside championships in January, finished 283rd in the senior men's event in a mammoth field of 1,288 runners over the 12km-course.

McKee's season could yet improve - as he will run for the Humberside team in Nottingham at Inter-counties event on March 11th.

Also competing in the capital on Saturday was Laura Jane Day who came 130th in the under-15 girls event over the 4km course.

MADDICK GETS TASTE OF WHAT'S TO COME
AAA Senior Championships - 11th-12th February 2006
Report by Jon Mattos

Nicky Maddick had a taste of what the future could hold for her in middle-distance running as she competed in her first senior national championships.

The Kingston upon Hull athlete, 18, ran in the Norwich Union World Trials and AAA Championships at Sheffield's English Institute for Sport and finished seventh in her heat in the 1500m in a time of 4mins 35.44sec. All at the club hope Nicky will learn from her experience of running against some of the finest indoor exponents as she looks to further her achievements in athletics.

LADIES DAY AT BLACKBURN
North of England Cross Country Championships, Saturday 28th January 2006
Report by Jon Mattos

Glamour and glory can be found in many different places for us runners and for Jo Maddick this has definitely been the case throughout January. On the 7th she was left down trodden after finishing 28th at the Belfast International, representing the North in the senior race, but bounced back in style to claim the top place on the podium at an IAAF meeting in Seville, Spain, just a week later.

And as we all know - confidence breeds confidence. So fast forward to the quaint setting of Witton Park in Blackburn and the 18-year-old from Willerby showed she had taken on board all she had learnt this month. Maddick sat poised throughout the race in a front pack of four girls in the junior women's event at the North of England Cross Country Championships. On the final lap she charged at the base of the final hill and darted clear to win by 11 seconds from her nearest rival in a time of 20.21mins over the 6km course.

All in all it was a day the female distance aces at the club could be proud of. Cheryl Lyons just missed out on the top 30 finish she had aimed for in the senior women's race - but nevertheless was delighted with her 32nd place finish in 33.48mins.

Meanwhile, in the under-15 girls race Michelle Stone was first KUH athlete home as four of our runners came inside the top 100. Stone continued her impressive form this season in cross country as she finished 15th in 14.20mins while Laura Day (15.14mins) just snuck into the top 50. Jodie Spender (15.49mins) came 86th over the 4km course, while Clare McPhee (16.00mins) was 96th and Beth Woodrow (16.18mins) narrowly missed out on the top ton as she came home in 104th.

Elsewhere for the girls, Beth Gray showed her raw potential for the future as she came home in eighth spot in 12.36mins in the girls under-13 race, with team-mate Anya Rawling (13.53mins) 67th over the 3km distance, while Becky Richardson finished 100th in the under-17 race in 26.11mins.

For the boys of KUH the performance of the day over the arduous course came from an unlikely source. In the under-15 boys race Jon Tucker lost one of his spikes shortly after the start but rather than give up the ghost he proceeded to run the whole race with just one shoe around the many hills and boggy patches of the Blackburn course. And far from coming in last, Tucker snuck inside the top 50, finishing 48th in a time of 13.20mins.

The club was well represented in the under-17 men's race as Matthew Pye led KUH home to a fifth place team finish. Pye set off sensibly and worked his way through the field to finish 38th in 21.12mins over the 6000 metres. And there was little to choose between the remaining 5 club aces - as only 15 places separated them. Luke Parkinson (21.51mins) was next home in 63rd just two places ahead of John Gilchrist (21.53mins). Stephen Feasey faded after a good start to cross in 73rd in 22.07mins with Jack Cutsforth a further seven seconds back in 75th and Thomas Fisher (22.18mins) a further three spots down the field.

The senior men of Kingston Upon Hull AC came a respectable 21st out of 47 teams. Gregan Clarkson shook off a niggling knee problem to lead the team home, finishing 96th in 42.18mins, while Tom McKee built on his recent good form by coming home in 102nd just 10 seconds behind Clarkson. Stuart Buchan used all his experience to gain places on the downhill segments of the course to finish 183rd in 44.54mins, while Jon Mattos' sprint finish helped him into the top 200 (198th in 45.10mins). Mike Baggot, 369th in 49.49mins, and Paul Sharp, 392nd in 50.27mins, made it a good afternoon for the seniors.

As usual the junior men's race was placed right at the end of the day. James Johnson did not let that bother him as he shrugged aside his long wait to complete the 8km course in under 30 mins (29.31mins) finishing in 37th, with Owen Williams coming 81st in 37.12mins.

FROM GUTTER TO GLORY IN 24 HOURS.
Northern Indoor Championships - 21st-22nd January 2006
Report by Alex Wileman

What separates a winner from the also-rans is the toughness to turn adversity into advantage, as Rob Hodges proved with literally ‘the biggest comeback since Lazarus.’

After spending Friday evening in a doctor’s surgery being cleaned up, the Kingston athlete made a miraculous recovery the next day, winning a regional title.

Hodges, as well as team-mate, Nicola Maddick, became Northern indoor u20 1500m champions as they struck gold in their respective finals at the English institute of Sport in Sheffield.

Hodges had seriously considered pulling out when a cycle accident rendered him dazed, bruised and with deep gashes on the eve of the big race. After swerving to miss an obliviously chatting couple of men who had stepped into the road, Hodges flew over his handlebars, crashing to earth along with his hopes of gold, as the men he had taken care to avoid laughed and offered no help.

But coach Trevor Therkelson calmly reminded his athlete that his training form was the best ever, and they decided to go for it anyway- and had the last laugh.

Though nervous on the starting line, the six- foot -plus Beverley teenager, sporting a brutal new haircut as well as his bandages, cut an intimidating figure, going on to dominate the race. A multiple Northern champion, he was the favourite, but must have flashed back to a previous Northern final where he was targeted, tripped and taken out of the running.

His confidence flooded back after a slow opening straight, after which he surged to the front and wound up the pace, going on to record 4.04.02- five seconds clear, and only three seconds from the championship record. ‘A performance of true Yorkshire grit,’ according to coach Therkelson.

No such drama for Maddick, as she eased to a championship record in the u20 women’s 1500m with 4.35.19 to complete a great day for the club.

Lois Earl made the final of the u17 60 hurdles as well as the triple jump and long jump, while Danny Thomas was 5th in the u20 mens long jump with 6.05m, and Rob Clark, Jordan Ellis and Zoe Garton gained vital experience at this high level of competition.

McKEE FINDS WINNING TOUCH
Humberside Cross Country Championships - Sunday 15th January 2006
Report by Jonathan Mattos

Tom McKee stepped out of the shadows to dominate the Senior Men's race at the Humberside Cross Country Championships.

The 24-year-old from Beverley, who has long since played second fiddle to his training partners, recorded his first major victory to book his place in the Humberside team for the Inter-Counties in Nottingham on March 11. After a mix up at the start, which saw McKee and Mick Jagger of Lincoln go the wrong way, McKee slowly worked his way to the front before surging clear of the field to win in 41.26mins.

There was triple joy for his coach Andy Lyons after fellow KUH group athletes Gregan Clarkson and Jon Mattos also qualified to run in front of the Sky cameras in Nottingham. Clarkson, who has been suffering with various illness' in recent weeks, came home in fourth in 42.09mins. KUH new boy Mattos (43.36mins) held off the late challenge of veteran Stuart Buchan (43.56mins) to claim sixth spot. Buchan was first vet home while Michael Baggott (50.37mins) was 23rd over the 11.3km course.

The Cleethorpe's course cut up more and more with each race to leave a boggy mess of a course towards the end of the day - although it was the tricky water jump that posed the most problems when it came into play for the senior and junior races.

It was a good day all round for the club with five more winners across the age groups. The most noticeable was the coming of age of Liam Holiday. Holiday put in a superb display of front running to claim victory in the under-15 boys race, although he was forced to battle to hold onto his lead in the closing stages.

Holiday, who completed the 5km course in 17.58mins, was backed up well by Mark Cage (20.25mins) who piped Jack Robinson (20.25mins) to ninth spot to earn KUH the second prize in the team race.

KUH took the team prize in the under-15 girls event thanks to first and second place finishes from the ever-impressive pair of Michelle Stone (16.00mins) and Laura-Jane Day (16.53mins) respectively. Clare McPhee also put in a barnstorming performance as she came home in fourth in 17.14mins, while Lauren Havercroft (18.56mins) and Beth Woodrow (19.09mins) completed a fine race for the club with their eighth and 10th place finishes.

In the under-13 girls 3.2km pursuit KUH came away with the bragging rights over all the many clubs in the region after Beth Gray, sauntered to the front to claim a tremendous victory in 13.05mins. She was backed up by Vicky Parcesepe who finished 5th.

This had preceded Katie Michaels' narrow first-place finish in the under-11 girls by just two seconds in 7.08mins, which helped bring home another team gold after Holly Skinner (4th), Katie Norris (7th) and Alice Middleton (8th) put in sterling feat's.

A podium-topping team display was also on show in the under-17 men's race. Stephen Feasey did not quite have enough in the tank to chase down Cleethorpe's Liam Clapham and had to settle for second in 22.06mins over the 6.3km course. Matthew Pye beat Luke Parkinson by just two seconds to bag the gloating honours along with fourth place, while Jack Cutsforth dragged his weary limbs over the line to claim ninth.

James Johnson took gold in the Junior Men's event, although he cruised to victory - barely breaking sweat - to see off the challenge of the only other two runners in the field, while running alongside him were the senior women.

Last year's winner Cheryl Lyons let a bronze slip from her grasp on the final lap and she had to settle for fourth.

Elsewhere, Dominic Haigh claimed bronze in the under-13 boys with team-mate Thomas Holgate in eighth, while there was another team first prize after Laura Frenneaux (4th) spearheaded a good team effort in the under-17girls backed up well by Sarah Gibson (5th) and Becky Richardson (7th).

MADDICK RECORDS DEBUT INTERNATIONAL VICTORY
Report by Andy Lyons

Kingston upon Hull A.C. athlete Jo Maddick (18) celebrated her debut in an England vest by storming to victory at the IAAF Cross Country meeting in Seville, Spain.

Jo’s consistent early season form was rewarded when she was selected to represent England in the junior women’s race at the prestigious Cross Internacional de Italica meeting on Sunday.  The occasion certainly inspired the Willerby athlete, as she eased to victory by an impressive 18-second margin, leading an English 1-2-3.  The three English athletes along with leading Spanish runner Tamara Fernandez established an early lead during the 4km event. However during the second half of the race the other three failed to live with Maddick’s pace and she continually extended her lead right to the finish. The victory, in front of her parents who had travelled to Spain for her debut run, helped to erase the memory of a disappointing run in the senior women’s race at the IAAF event in Belfast the week before. After her win Maddick commented “I’m so pleased, but really shocked. It’s been an amazing weekend”.

She will now concentrate on domestic matters with runs at the North of England, and British Universities Championships before targeting the World Championships Trials in March.

MADDICK MARKS DEDUT WITH VICTORY

By Jon Mattos

CONGRATULATIONS go out to Jo Maddick. Jo was competing for the first time for England in an IAAF junior women's race in Seville and she spearheaded an English 1,2,3  by romping home in first.

This just a week after Jo had come away disappointed by her performance for the North of England in a Reebok race in Belfast. Jo was watched by her parents who had made the trip out to the south of
Spain to cheer her on.

We hear on the grapevine she donned a rather dashing crown as reward for her triumph, this to accompany the plate she received for winning.

Well done Jo from everyone at Kingston Upon Hull Athletic Club.

LEARNING EXPEREINCE FOR DUO
NOEAA Indoor Open Meeting, EIS Sheffield.

By Jon Mattos

Kingston Upon Hull duo John Twiddle and Amy Giblin rediscovered some of their competitive edge as they competed in the NOEAA indoor open meeting in Sheffield.

With the winter very much in full flow and the summer season far back over the horizon it is time for the club's finest to get back on the track and compete on the indoor circuit.

Twiddle and Giblin did just that over the weekend as they pitted themselves against some of the finest indoor talents in the north.

Twiddle was pitted in the sixth heat of the 60m and came a creditable seventh in a time of 8.19sec and he also found time to compete in the Shot Putt, finishing in ninth with a best throw on 11.19m.

Giblin, meanwhile, recorded a time of 8.53sec as she finished sixth in heat 12 of the 60m.

KUH STARS PUT ON SHOW FOR THE SCHOOLS
East Riding School's Championships, Longcroft  26.11.2005.

By Jon Mattos

Young starlets from the club took one step closer to the National School's Championships in the New Year with solid performances in achieving qualification from the East Riding School's Championship. KUH scooped three wins across the age groups as the athlete's tried to conquer the windy conditions across a challenging course, which threw up the veritable treats of running around school football pitches.

In the Inter Girls category Michelle Stone recorded her second victory in a week, after sauntering home to win at Bishop Burton the previous Sunday. Over the two-lap 4km course Laura Frenneaux took fourth while Sarah Gibson came in sixth.

Rob Hodges needed little effort to take the honours in the Senior Boys race, tackling the 5.8km course with his usual languid and upright style to progress one step closer to what he hopes will be a successful onslaught on the National Championships.

Training partner James Johnson came in third while Steve Feasey took fourth. The third of the KUH winners was Andy Burlock who made light work of the 4km two-lap course to take the plaudits in the Junior Boys race. Elsewhere, the club was well represented in all the other categories and saw many of its youngsters progress into the next round.

In the Inter Boys four of the top six finishers, who received certificates for their achievements, came from the club. Matty Pye saw off the challenge of Jack Cutsforth to take second, with John Tucker (4th) and Liam Holiday (5th) impressing on a day where many thanked their lucky stars that the predicted snow never arrived. Mark Cage finished 15th, rightfully earning his place to represent East Riding on the 4th of March.

Beth Gray shone in the Junior Girls event to grab second place, with Beth Woodrow in fifth and Vicky Parcesepe in seventh.

Becky Richardson achieved a podium finish, scooping a medal with her third place finish in the Senior Girls, and Anya Rawling finished fifth in the Year 7 Girls race.

MADDICK PROVES HER WORTH
UK Cross Challenge, Liverpool - 26.11.2005

By Jon Mattos

Jo Maddick further emphasised why she is one of the top endurance athlete's in the north with an excellent performance at the UK Cross Challenge. Competing at Liverpool's Sefton Park the 18-year-old Kingston Upon Hull ace showed real guts to stay with some of the UK's top under-20 and under-17 runners.

Maddick, who is studying a degree at Loughborough University, finished 14th in a competitive field around the three-lap 5km course. Recording a time of 18min 12sec, Maddick beat the likes of Danielle Christmas - a recent member of the "On Camp with Kelly" group - and rising star Sarah Waldron.

She was narrowly defeated by another member of Dame Kelly Holmes' development squad, Non Stanford, in a race won by Gloucester ace Emily Pidgeon.

Maddick said: "I thought it was going to be one long lap and one short, but when we got there I saw it was three short laps. "It just felt like we were going round and round!
"It was also quite flat and I don't usually like those sorts of courses."
The KUH star admitted she had been happy with her afternoon's work on a tough course in Merseyside.

She added: "I've only been able to do about six weeks of solid training since I went to University what with things going on so I was pleased with how it went."

Meanwhile, there was also success for Cheryl Lyons and Tom McKee in the senior races. Lyons, 33, finished 63rd (27.10 min) over the testing 6.5km course and felt happy with how she finished the race, commenting: "I even passed someone on the last lap," as she reflected on her race.

McKee was also left satisfied as he competed over the four-lap 10km course, finishing in 118th in 35min 31sec. He said: "I had a pretty good race. I was quite happy with it." The event at Sefton Park also incorporated the European trials and thus attracted strong fields in each of the 10 races.

SUNDAY SUCCESS FOR CLUB ATHLETES
Bishop Burton XC - 20.11.2005

Report by Jon Mattos

Some fantastic individual displays lit up the Regional Cross Country Championships on a crisp November day at Bishop Burton College. There were victories for five Kingston Upon Hull athletes over the challenging course, which required astute running from all the competitors to tackle the many varying tests facing the participants.

The performance of the day came from Callum Skinner, who showed his obvious potential for the future by storming to first place in the under-11 Boys race.

Over the 1700m-course Skinner displayed some fantastic front running to beat his nearest opponent by 59 seconds, recording a time of 7mins 52sec. In the same race Liam Petch came home in 12th (9.44min) while Oliver Kitchman claimed 17th (10.14min) as KUH claimed second in the team event.

There was a one-two for the club in the under-15 Girls as Michelle Stone got some much needed competitive action under her belt as she claimed the win. Stone moved to the front very quickly, leaving club colleague Laura Jane Day trailing in her wake, and never looked back as her good technique held strong to the end - helping her to a winning time of 15min 58sec. Day was also impressive, beating her nearest rival by 57 seconds, claiming second spot in 17min 07sec.

There was a big turn out of KUH athletes in the under-11 Girls as the club swooped the team gold thanks to some gritty performances at 11.00 am in the first race of the day. The club had four athletes in the top six with Katie Michaels (8.31min) moving away from Katie Norris (8.49min) to snatch second place. A matter of metres behind Alice Middleton (8.56min) was involved in a thrilling three-person sprint finish which saw her claim fifth spot ahead of club-mate Holly Skinner (8.59min). Jessica Lonsdale (9.19min) finished 10th and there were good performances from Amy Hewitt (23rd), Katie Asquith (24th) and Rhianne Nendrick (26th).

There was double joy for the club in the under-15 Boys race as John Tucker's fine run earned him the first-placed trophy in 14min 56sec. Tucker's victory also helped KUH to the team prize as Jack Robinson (16.41min), Mark Cage (16.56min) and Stephen Richardson (17.08min) came up with the goods to finish eighth, ninth and 10th respectively.

Both senior / veteran events also brought victories for the club. Gregan Clarkson, kitted out in his trademark bandana and multi-coloured knee length socks, had little trouble in romping to win in 32min 15sec. Soon to be KUH member Jon Mattos, running his last race for Cheltenham Harriers, claimed the final podium place as he saw off club veteran Stuart Buchan (35.49min). Mike Baggott (37.56min) claimed fourth in the overall veterans race finishing 12th overall beating Phil McCoy (38.34min).

Meanwhile, in the women's race, which also incorporated the under-17 race, youngster Laura Frenneaux ran from the front to beat her senior opponents to claim the under-17 title at the end of the day.

Dominic Haigh narrowly missed out on a top three finish by four seconds, claiming fourth in 8min 49sec in the under-13 Boys, while in the corresponding race for the girls Naomi Petch (12.53min) came in 21st.
