JOHNSON SHINES FOR KINGSTON
Men's 6 Stage Northern Road Relays, Warrington - 29.09.07
By Jon Mattos

Kingston Upon Hull Athletic Club will compete at the National men’s six stage road relays for only the fifth time in the club’s history after putting in a fine showing at the Northern Championships.

Loughborough student James Johnson, the North of England 3,000m bronze medallist, was the star of the team as he produced the 28th fastest display overall to lead Kingston to a fine 11th place finish in Warrington.

The club narrowly missed out on qualifying in the top 25 in 2006, but lead runner Johnson made sure that would not be the case this time. The 19-year-old was a full 63 seconds quicker than his five team-mates as he put Kingston into ninth spot with a time of 26min 53sec for the 8.4km leg.

Rob Hodges, Tom McKee, Dave Ricketts and Jack Cutsforth all kept the side comfortably in contention in a qualifying position in the top 20 before club coach Andy Lyons anchored them home in an overall time of 2hr 46min 33sec.

Former Great Britain international Lyons, who was the second fastest in the team with a time of 27min 28sec, commented: “It was a storming leg from JJ (Johnson)".

“He went to the front with the leading group and gave it everything."

“He might not be the quickest over 800m but he is really strong on the longer stuff and I think he’ll make a very good 5km runner in the future.”

Kingston now head to the national’s at Sutton Park in Birmingham on Saturday, October 20 hoping to improve on their best showing in 2001, when they finished 23rd. The club’s B team came home in 63rd spot.

TYNESIDE JOY FOR TUCKER
Great North Junior Run - 29.09.07
By Jon Mattos

Kingston Upon Hull Athletic Club’s Jon Tucker was in superb form as he showcased his talent at the Great North Run junior race to great effect.

The 16-year-old from Anlaby, who was competing in the Tyneside event for the second consecutive year, came home with a superb fourth place finish, narrowly missing out on a medal.

For Tucker it was a timely return to form following a difficult 2007 season. The Wolfreton School student looked primed to take his mantle as one of the most promising young distance runners in the area after showing some early season form over the cross country.

Tucker beat many of his older rivals in a competitive Humberside Championships in January, coming home fourth, and followed that up by narrowly missing out on a top 50 finish in the North of England trials.

However, the Kingston ace then struggled with a niggling back injury for months and was later forced to give up his hope of making the English Schools Track & Field Championships after a shin problem meant he had to give up his favoured steeplechase event.

But Tucker, who had been rewarded with a place in the regional talent squad for his promise in the 1,500m chase before his season disintegrated, showed his trademark grit and determination to battle back to fitness and a 13th-placed finish at the Jim Dingwall Elloughton 10km race in August showed he was back to his best.

The youngster, who is coached by former Great Britain international Andy Lyons, lined up alongside 1,200 runners on the streets of Gateshead and managed to force his way to the front early on.

Despite a fast start, Tucker was still in the leading pack at the halfway point – although it was at this point that eventual winner Danny Cliffe from Cheshire sprang for home with two other runners.

Tucker then found himself in a three man group which included Marcus Cram, son of former 1,500m world-record holder Steve Cram.

But he managed to see off both runners in the final third of the race and, in the end, only finished six seconds off a podium spot after chasing down bronze-medal winner Ben Connor in the closing stages.

Having finished eighth in 2006 a fourth-spot result, in a time of 14min 37sec, was a fine achievement and earned the teenage athlete a place in this winter’s regional talent squad once again.

National Young Athletes Road Relays
Sutton Park , Birmingham - 21.10.07

KINGSTON upon Hull Athletic Club tasted success at the National Young Athletes Road Relays in Birmingham after the under-17 girls team recorded a superb 11th place finish.

The team of Lauren Havercroft, Michelle Stone and Laura-Jane Day came home in a time of 44min 32sec following three legs of 3.8km. The trio had finished 16th at the event last year in terrible rainy conditions, but with the sun glistening down on Sutton Park they went to task achieving the target set by coach Sam Hodges.

She told HotShots: “They came 16th last year and we gave them an aim to beat that, which they did. They did really well.” Havercroft showed she is hitting form at the right time, ahead of her preferred cross-country season, after putting Kingston into 20th spot following the first leg - which included all the strongest runners for each club.

Stone then passed seven athletes before Day brought the side home with the 29th fastest individual time of all the under-17 girls on the day of 14min 34sec. But Hodges singled out Havercroft for special praise, she said: “Lauren had a really good run on the first leg.

“Her mum did not recognise her coming in as she did not believe it was her. She did not think she was going to finish so soon.

“It’s a very good start to the season for her, it looks promising for the cross country.”

However, the boys under-17 team did not have things their own way.

Lead off runner Mark Cage found himself in a difficult position at the start line and following a fast start by some of the strongest runners in the country, he found himself off the pace.

But Cage managed to work his way up to 66th before pole-vaulter Liam Holiday managed to hand over to Jon Tucker in 56th.

Tucker, who finished fourth at the Great North Run junior race recently, was competing at the event for the first time and showed his great strength by bringing Kingston home in 44th in a time of 40min 53sec.

Both the girls and boys team now head to Mansfield next weekend for the National Cross Country Relay Championships.

Saucony National XC Relays
Berry Hill Park , Mansfield - 03.10.07
By Jon Mattos

KATIE Michaels was the star for Kingston upon Hull Athletic Club as she led the under-13 girls team to a superb sixth spot at the English Cross Country Relays in Mansfield.

The middle-distance ace from Beverley led Kingston’s A team home around the undulating course at Berry Hill Park in a combined time of 23min 24.55sec.

At the relay event, which see teams of three from across England do battle, Jess Lonsdale had put Kingston into 15th before Katie Norris helped pass over to Michaels in ninth.

Michaels, who helped the same trio finish sixth at the North of England Road Relay Championships in October, then completed her leg in 7min 36.75sec, a full 13 seconds quicker than her two team-mates.

There was more top 10 success for Kingston in the form of the junior men. Jack Cutsforth, 17, was joined by Loughborough students Rob Hodges and James Johnson as Kingston’s A team booked their place as the 10th best club in the country, with Cutsforth clocking a time of 9min 32sec for the second leg.

In the same age group, Danny Holiday was part of an incomplete B team and on the first leg he raced into the overall lead after 500m only to fatigue late on.

In-form athlete Laura-Jane Day was consistent as usual and her rapid clocking on leg two of the under-17 race helped her team, which also included Lauren Havercroft and Michelle Stone, finish 15th.

In the same age group, Jodie Spencer also produced a quick clocking in an incomplete B team.

Elsewhere, there were fine finishes from the under-15 girls and under-17 men, who finished 26th and 34th respectively.

Quibell Park XC, Scunthorpe
11th November 2007
By Jon Mattos (Report extracted from HotShots)

You know winter has started when hordes of enthusiastic kids don their vest and head out into the cold to run around a muddy field.

Yes, that’s right – the cross country season is back with us once again and the first event in our region saw 40 youngsters from Hull and East Yorkshire compete at the Annual Quibell Park Cross Country in Scunthorpe.

Many primary school children, some as young as eight, were making their first ever appearances at club level and if the cold wind and difficult course did not put them off then not a lot will.

With taking part seemingly the agenda of the day, one would have easily lost sight of some of the superb performances on show – and nowhere was this more evident than with the athletes from Beverley Athletic Club.

Beverley are not usually a club that steals the headlines, but they certainly came away happy from their trip across the Humber Bridge after swooping 2 individual gold medals and three team golds.

In what proved to be a highly competitive under-15 girls race, Harriet Taylor narrowly missed out on first after a strong run and was backed up well by Jasmine Dalton in third as they piped Hull Achilles to the team gong.

Achilles had strong showings from Courtenay Gray and Aisha Clark, who finished fourth and fifth respectively, while Storm Hayward, the daughter of local road running star Melanie, was a creditable eighth to help the team take silver.

Beverley’s Peter McGill led from the front to win the under-13 race and help his team of Curtis Arnott and Ethan Dalton take gold from their exertions around the 2.7km course.

Fellow club colleague Andrew Harding was in dominant form from the gun as he took the under-15 race and, with Thomas Hoyle recording a creditable fourth spot, Beverley once more took team honours.

Beverley also had good showing in the under-17 race from Josh Rowe and Corey Arnott, while Dayna Arnott was their star under-11 on the day, coming home 12th.

It was in the under-11 category that most smiles were seen on the start line as many runners made their full debuts.

Kingston upon Hull Athletic club took a six-strong squad with them to Scunthorpe and came away with a bronze after Ellie Wilkinson’s seventh place was backed up by fine debut runs from cousins Lucy and Caitlin Witherwick.

Matthew Carmichael was the sole representative from our region in the under-11 boys, but after a slow start he produced a strong finish in the later stages to take sixth.

Kingston’s biggest success of the day unsurprisingly came in the under-13 girls race.

The club has a strong pool of under-13 athletes to call upon this season and following strong displays in recent relay events, the talented trio of Jess Lonsdale, Katie Norris and Alice Middleton again came up trumps.

Lonsdale, 12, had to settle for an individual bronze after losing in a sprint finish, while Norris came home fourth and hurdles specialist Middleton eighth as the team took gold. For Hull Achilles Ellie Robinson came home seventh and Charlotte Dodds in 12th.

With so much raw talent on show, who knows, maybe we were seeing the HotShots stars of the future in action.

National XC Alton Towers - 23rd February 2008
Report by Gregan Clarkson

24 members of the club took on the countries leading cross country runners at the annual National Cross Country Championships, staged for the first time at Alton Towers, a new venue for this event.Conditions were pretty good under foot with a few muddy patches here and there, the weather perfect, dry with no wind and the course quite hilly, with a lot of turns on a narrow course with one big climb towards the end of each lap.

First up were the Under 15 Boys who had to run 4km. Though the club had no one in this event Alex Gibson ran in the East Hull Harriers colours and finished in 125th place in a time of 14.22. The club hope to retain Alex for forthcoming track season after spending the entire day with the rest of the KuHAC team.

The second race of the day saw the Junior Women racing alongside the Under 17 Women in a 5km race. Steph Bloor putting behind her some of her lengthy injury spells to produce a fine run in the Junior Women’s race finishing in a superb 29th place in a time of 15.42. Emily Curry, the clubs other representative in this race finished 81st in a time of 17.56.In the Under 17 Women’s race Jodie Spencer was the first KuHAC athlete home with a fine run in 41st place in a time of 16.31. The highlight of the day was the Under 13 Girls race where club training partners Jess Lonsdale and Katie Michaels went head to head with the best Under 13 girls in the country over the 3.2km course at the front of the field. Both girls featured in the top 10 at some point during the race with Jess Lonsdale just getting the better of Katie at the finish, her time 12.10 ensured she finished in 16th place, whilst Katie, who ran the last 400m with just one shoe on finished just behind Jess in 28th place in 12.24. Two more of their training partners had a good battle of their own on the course, Katie Norris just getting the better of Alice Middleton at the finish line. Katie finishing in 121st place in a time of 13.15 whilst Alice finished 3 places further back and one second behind Katie. The four girls helping the team to finish in 8th place in the team competition. Barton XC Meeting
Sunday 2nd March 2008
Report by Gregan Clarkson

The Barton Cross Country Championships is known as one of the most popular events within the local area. Yet again in its 28th year this proved correct as 21 of the clubs athletes took on the course in Baysgarth Park against clubs as far away as Leeds, Halifax, Holmfirth and Cheshire. The course fairly firm under foot but also quite breezy.

The opening race of the day was the Under 11 girls race with Chelsea Walker claiming another win, crowning off an excellent cross-country season. She won the 1.25 mile run by 7 seconds, winning in a time of 7.35. She was backed up by Lucy Witherwick in 6th place in 8.10, her cousin Caitlin Witherwick in 15th place in 8.36 and Keri-Beth Dymock in 17th place in 8.47. Chelsea, Lucy and Caitlin helping the team to finish 2nd place in the team competition.

The 2nd race of the day saw the Under 11 boys line up on the same course as the Under 11 girls, an event dominated by Kingston upon Hull athletes. Andrew Hess won the race in a time of 7.26 who was backed up by Sam Witherwick in 2nd place finishing 3 seconds behind Hess in 7.29. Alex Czelecki finished 2 places further down the field in 4th place in 7.39. There was no surprise the 3 of them helped KuHAC to take the team prize quite convincingly. Also in this race Lewis Russell produced a fine run in 7th place in 8.10 and also Joshua Norman finished in 24th place in 9.21.

The Under 13 Girls were next up on the course running the same route as the Under 11 Boys and Girls. Alice Middleton was the first KuHAC athlete home in 6th place who found the course a little too short for her likings finishing in a time of 7.35. She was backed up with two of her training partners further down the field. Rebecca Gill finished in 10th place in a time of 7.49 and Zoe Czelecki finishing in 18th place in a time of 8.06. The three girls helping themselves to the 3rd placed team in the prize competition.

The 4th race of the day saw the Under 13 Boys race over the distance of 2 miles with Jack Michaels the first KuHAC athlete home in 9th place in a time of 12.40. The other athlete in this race was Matthew Elvidge who finished in 11th place in a time of 13.54. In the next race, the Under 15 Girls race also over the distance of 2 miles. Nicole Peters was the sole KuHAC representative in this race. Nicole finished in 9th place in a time of 13.29.

Excitement prevailed in the Senior Men’s race (run with the Junior and Vets men) as Gregan Clarkson took on the 6mile course with old friend and old foe Mick Jagger from Lincoln Wellington at the front of the field. The two of them ran alongside each other for the first 5 miles before Gregan pulled away for a fine victory, his first over Mick in race conditions. His time 34.48. Gregan was backed up by Graham Gagg who also produced a fine run finishing in 6th place in a time of 38.45. Mike Friend also ran in this race and finished 21st in a time of 43.11. Mike was the 11th vet to finish in the race.

The Senior Women’s race was the next race to run (run with the Under 17 ladies, junior and vet ladies). This produced 4 good runs from 4 training partners over the 2.5 mile course. Michelle Stone and Lauren Havercroft (both Under 17) producing by far the best finish to a race on the day, battling it out over a sprint finish. In the end Michelle just got the better of Lauren despite Lauren leading most of the way round the course. 2 seconds split them at the finish line with Michelle finishing in 3rd place in 16.22 and Lauren in 4th place in 16.24. They were well backed up by Jodie Spencer (also Under 17) in 7th place in 16.58 and Emily Curry in 8th place (Junior Lady) in 17.11. Emily the 1st Junior Lady home. Michelle, Lauren and Jodie not only finishing in 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the Under 17’s race, they also took the team prize as well. Overall 21 good runs from KuHAC athletes.
