Best Finish for Kingston
20th July - Young Athletes League Northern Premier, Match 5, Hull
Report by Jon Mattos (Hotshots)
KINGSTON upon Hull Athletic Club are celebrating after achieving their best ever finish in the UK Young Athletes League.
The club managed a second place spot in the final match of the season on home soil at Costello Stadium against Gateshead, Liverpool and West Cheshire to leave them in seventh place overall for the season in the Northern Premier Division.
Having finished eighth last campaign, a best result at the time, the club were hopeful of improving and thanks to having more athletes to pick from they improved by one place in the standings against the very best 18 athletics clubs in the north of England.
The YAL competition is considered one of the most prestigious leagues for juniors in the whole of Europe and many of the current Great Britain athletes who will be competing at the Olympic Games in Beijing have competed at one time in the event.
And Kingston managed to finish ahead of teams from Sheffield, York and Blackburn, while they were only four points from fourth spot and making the Auxiliary final against teams from across the UK.
HotShots has been told Kingston's two successful years will not just be a flash in the pan and there are high hopes of improving on the seventh spot achieved over the five fixtures in 2008.
"We've got a lot of very good under-11 athletes coming through who will move up to under-13s next season and add even more strength to the team" boys team manager Danny Holiday told HotShots.
"The club has some strong under-11s including some good sprinters like Sam Ounsworth.
"Some of our strong under-13s will also be going up an age group so we will be stronger across the board."
During match five in Hull, there were some exceptional performances from Kingston's youngsters to help them finish in second.
Lydia Parker moved up to second in the Yorkshire rankings after breaking the club's junior and under-17 pole vault record with a new best of 2.80m to win maximum points, while there were four other victories from vaulters coached by Malcolm Brooks on the day.
On debut the club's most recent newcomer Josh Harby surprised many onlookers as he took first place in the under-13 100m (13.5sec), shot putt (9.51m) and high jump (1.51m).
Team captain Steve Richardson dipped under the 12-second mark in the under-17 100m to win in 11.7sec before winning the long jump with 5.89m with Tom Horner winning the B with 5.44m.
Jess Lonsdale and Alice Middleton dominated the under-15 girls 1,500m, while in the under-13s Maddy Bolton was victorious again in the 70m hurdles as she equalled her best of 11.9sec to keep herself in the top 10 in the UK rankings.
In the under-17s Emma Jackson romped to wins in the 100m and 200m before winning extra points for the team by finishing second in the shot, while Sonia Santos cruised home in first in the 300m hurdles.
Massive points winners for the boys were the under-15 throwing squad of Alec Russell, Dom Bloomfield, Nathan Barr and Anthony Norfolk who all took maximum points on the day.
"It was a great result to finish seventh" added Holiday.
"The last couple of matches went really well and it's brilliant that we could improve on the eighth place from last season.
"We've been a lot more consistent and been able to get more athletes in each event which has helped.
"Alec Russell deserves a special mention. He's a hammer, discus and shot putt thrower and does all of those events for the team but he has also done the long jump, a couple of sprints and relays as well as the 1,500m in the last match.
"And he does not disgrace himself in any of those other events like the long jump and that's great considering he is only bottom age under-15.
"I'm sure he could make a good multi events athletes if he wanted to in the future.
"Steve Richardson is doing the UK Games in Bath soon with the schools and he was a top captain for us and the under-15 throwers who compete with Alec made a good squad of throwers for us.
"Sonia Santos has been improving in the hurdles all season and Emma Jackson has been great as usual, while Lydia Parker broke the pole vault record in the last match.
"That's been one of the brilliant things this season, having pole vaulters in every event - we've won a lot of extra points this way."
27th July 2008 - National Junior League Match 4 Report
By Sean Harkin
Kingston travelled to their final league match of the season needing a strong performance to keep them above Wakefield, and in with a chance of qualifying for the promotion match for the second year in a row.
We finally saw some decent weather, but the track was giving many of the athletes issues, with several complaining of burning feet and blisters. However, the athletes still delivered the goods with a large number of personal best performances.
The first of these was delivered by Mike Jennings who threw 62.55 to claim the A victory, with Pete Smith having a rare off day, but doing more than enough to win the B event with 60.59. Mike added two further PBs in the shot and discus with 10.16 and 26.21, Pete also improved his discus mark with 36.38.
Steve Richardson extended his best in the Long Jump with a leap of 6.30, but was still beaten by a centimetre with the last jump of the competition; he also improved his 100m with a time of 11.6. Ben Bainbridge ran well in the 200m for 25.1, and showed well in the LJ and TJ with 4.40 and 10.06. Sean Rose had an off day in the PV, but scored well in the Javelin with 36.34.
Mark Cage delivered 3 PBs, with a 62.0 run in the 400m Hurdles, 18.9 in the 110m Hurdles and 7:26.9 in the steeplechase. These last two events also saw PB performances from Liam Holiday, who equalled his best in the 110 with 19.0, and improved to 7:10.3 in the 2k steeplechase, in addition he also equalled his best in the pole vault with 3.40.
The distance boys performed well in the heat, with Tom Smith clocking 51.7 in the 400m for a new PB, Matty Pye ran really well for 9:27.1 in the 3k and in his words a jog round the 1500m with 4:22.3, how I would love to be able to jog anywhere near that pace. Jon Tucker produced an 800m PB of 2:08.1; however this appears to have slipped past the power of 10 co-ordinators, as well as 10:16.9 in the 3K.
Amy Giblin had her best day of the season, and passed the post first on three occasions, a new PB of 13:0 in the 100m, 26.9 in the 200m, and anchored the sprint relay team of Lydia Parker, Megan Hoult and Sonia de Santos to a more than respectable 50.8. The rest of the relay girls also delivered new standards on the day, Sonia with 200m of 26.5 and 400mH of 65.8. Megan ran 400m for the first time and clocked 65.5, to go with her win in the 100m in 12.5.Lydia also ran 13.0 in the 100m, and was just short of her best in the PV winning with 2.70, where NJL debutante Lorna Malton won the B event with 1.80.
The middle distance girls also showed their mettle, Emily Curry being selected for the tough 800m and 400m double in 25 minutes, and running 2:22.4(PB) and 63.8, this despite blisters and bleeding feet. Jodie Spencer and Lauren Havercroft produced strong runs to record 4:53.7 and 5:11.5, both of which were again PBs. Michelle Stone and Laura Jane Day won the 3000m in 11:13.4 and 11:58.3, and along with Jodie and Lauren ran strongly for 2nd in the 4*400m in 4:18.5
Nikki Bates again threw consistently well with 31.23 in the hammer, 24.03 in the discus and 27.34 in the Javelin.
